How did Tomas Berdych somehow eliminate Roger Federer in Athens ’04?
To those who watched the match, did the Czech play lights out tennis or something? Sure takes a lot to take out the Fed express!

This was between Federer’s preparations from Wimbledon and the US Open. He won both remember.
I remember at the time thinking that Federer probably wasn’t going to punish himself at the Olympics – yes there is national pride, and I am sure Federer would do his best for his country – but with the Olympics being in between two of the Grand Slams, it is not ideal timing for the rest of the ATP year. The Olympics carries no ranking points (not that I am saying this made a difference to Roger), and I think all this, together with Berdych being fairly good on the day, contributed to Federer’s exit.
Recall that Federer’s truly invincible years were from the end of 2004 to 2007. This was probably his last significant lapse until 2008.
